Silicon Mediates the Effects of Salt Stress in Plants

Crops

Salt sensitive and salt tolerant sugar cane genotypes were used for the trial

The outcomes were:
  • Salt sensitive genotypes treated with salt alone “showed reductions of up to 43% in cane yield”
  •  The salt tolerant genotype “showed a 27% reduction in cane yield”
  •  “Juice quality characteristics such as Brix, Sucrose, commercial cane sugar and sugar recovery were significantly improved in both the salt sensitive and salt tolerant sugarcane genotypes with the supplementation of silicates”
